Guida mensile al clima in Kos

Kos is famed among Brits for its beaches, landmarks, history, and glorious weather. Beach days, cycling, exploring, or relaxing – you can do it all. Choosing which month you travel will probably be the most difficult decision – because let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to visit the second most popular Greek island.

Temperatura del mare

january is one of the quietest (and wettest) months of the year. You get an average temperature of 11°c with highs creeping to 13° and because lows will sit at 8°, you’ll want to pack some warmer clothes.

Surprisingly the sea is 17° and this may be warm enough for those who love to swim, come rain or shine. You’ll get 5 hours of sun per day with a possibility of 12 rainy days across the entire month – these should only be light to moderate showers though.

Because of the climate the beaches will be quiet, making a romantic walk ideal for a January afternoon. Tingaki is a good option, with its soft white sand and beautiful views.

If you do get a cloudy or wet day, head to the Archaeological Museum. Boasting some of Greece’s ancient discoveries over 2 floors, those who enjoy history will love visiting here.

In February, the hours of sun increase by 1 per day and there will also be less chance of rain (10 days to be exact). There will however be a decrease in temperature but only by a degree or so and you’ll still get to enjoy the island while it is quiet.

Put on your walking shoes and visit Neratzia Castle – as you tour the remains of the castle of the knights, you will discover the lower levels where you’ll see a lot of historical ruins or venture to the top battlement area where you’ll get some lovely views of the harbour.

If it’s too cold to head to the beach but you still want to be able to take a leisurely dip, we’d suggest seeking accommodation with a heated pool so that you don’t miss out on a swim, as it will most likely be too cold at 16°c to go in the sea.

If you’re not too keen on the sweltering heat and have based your holiday around sightseeing instead of a beach holiday, then February is an ideal month to travel.

There is a shift in temperature from March as the average increases to 12°c and you could experience highs of 14°. The number of hours of sun remains at 6 per day and with the amount of rain over the month decreasing by 1 day, March is a pleasant time to take your break.

Kos is known as the cycling island and what better way to explore than to hire a bike to follow the many cycle routes around Kos – you can book a guided cycle tour or choose to go it alone – either way you’ll discover villages, beaches, historical sites, and restaurants to refuel. The climate will be comfortable enough for you to venture out for the whole day.

The sea will be cool at 16° and most probably won’t want to brave a swim. If you do want to get out onto the water though, then there will be a variety of boat tours to choose from, including an island cruise with lunch or a glass bottom boat trip.

You should have no problems taking a stroll along the beach, and in Tigaki you can do just that. Located on the north coast, this huge beach is made of soft white sand and there are views of the sea as far as your eyes will take you.

Spring is here and the climate changes for the better during April. Highs of 18°c are now with us and it starts to feel like summer is round the corner. Lows of 12° are still possible so pack something for the chilly days or nights.

The sun will shine for 7 hours which makes April the perfect time for a holiday, especially since rain will only be present for 5 days of the entire month.

Outdoors is the best place to be so why not visit Kos Natural Park in Zia – get closer to nature, see a variety of animals, and stroll along the designated paths as you take in a little piece of paradise.

If you want a more traditional stay, we’d suggest finding accommodation in one of the many mountain villages, keeping in mind that some places may offer reduced services. Though if you really want to live like a local, April should be quiet enough to experience the authenticity of the island.

By the end of April the climate will have improved further so visiting the beach for a few hours is a possibility.

May sees temperatures reach the 20’s – there will be highs of 23°c and average daily temperatures between 20 and 21°, making this month an ideal time to visit if you want to spend most of it outdoors.

Rain is forecast over 7 days of the month, but towards the end the cloud will begin to clear and the temperature will rise further. You’ll also notice the sun is present for 2 extra hours, giving you plenty of time to fit things in.

Spending a day at the beach is possible now, so head to Marmari Beach which has plenty of facilities, soft sand, and good waves for water sports. You’ll have everything close by for a full day at the beach. The sea may be warm enough for some to have a quick dip, though at 19° it will depend on personal preference.

Not far away is the quiet village of Marmari – you don’t get as many tourists here so those who enjoy holidaying without the crowds will find May is an ideal time to travel to Kos.

If you’re looking for somewhere truly exquisite to visit, you won’t want to miss going to the Ancient Roman Odeon – a stunning place that still has some of its original marble seats, as well as the floor and orchestra pit. This is a must see for anyone who loves history and monumental sites.

The drier weather begins in June, and you’ll be pleased to know that with only 3 days of rain over the entire month, you probably won’t see any during your stay (unless you’re really unlucky!), and even if you do it’ll only be a light shower.

10 hours of sun will entice the sunbathers to the beach and now the sea temperature is comfortable enough at 22°c there will be a lot of tourists heading to the water too.

Lambi Beach is worth visiting – you get a mixture of sand in the north and pebbles to the south. It is a great option for those with smaller children and novice swimmers because the sea is quite shallow, but if you do enjoy the waves then make sure you try the water sports on offer.

If discovery and activity are on your agenda, then you could try a hiking trip. With mountain peaks over 800m high, you will get to experience some breathtaking sights. You’ll no doubt pass some ancient monuments, as well as mountain views, striking greenery, and the horizon as far as your eyes can see.

Even though most hotels and facilities are available now, don’t just assume it will be easier to book accommodation or attractions – do your research and plan early enough to avoid disappointment.

Tourists begin to flock to the island for the next few months and with good reason – 10 hours of sunshine, little chance of rain, and temperatures that do not fall below 20°c. You could even see highs entering the early 30’s at the end of the month.

July offers clear skies, a brilliant climate, and although known as the windiest month, you’ll still only get a gentle breeze which will be a welcome one when the sun is at its hottest.

Relaxing on the beach and working on your tan are the things most people look forward to when planning their getaway, and you have so many to choose from in Kos.

Agios Fokas Beach in the southeast is a mixture of sand and pebbles offering sun loungers and umbrellas. You may be able to get some natural shade from the pine trees and with the sea at a temperature of 24°c, it will be perfect for cooling off. Beach sports and water sports are also available for the more active.

Visit the Asclepeion if you thrive on ancient ruins and monuments. Over 3 levels and once a place of healing where Hippocrates underwent his medical training, there are just the remains of a once enormous building.

All restaurants and cafés will be fully open and you’ll want to indulge in some authentic Greek cuisine while you’re in Kos.

A Rose Tinted World The weather in Kos in July is really hot and sunny. It is rare to see a cloud in the sky during the day, so make sure you don't fall asleep whilst sunbathing or you can quickly burn! It is perfect weather for lounging around a pool, and if you go sightseeing on the island be sure to carry water and a hat, stay in the shade and maybe avoid the sun around midday. The nights are also hot, so no need for a cardigan, coat or wrap, but definitely best to have a fan or air conditioning in your room if you want to stay cool. A Rose Tinted World

The climate in August is not too dissimilar to that of July, although the island sees more visitors. Families taking their school holidays are amongst some of the tourists descending on the island.

Highs of 29°c and lows of 22° mean you’ll be able to enjoy full days which carry on into the evening thanks to the warm temperatures. Your day can be as action packed or laid back as you like, with something to suit everyone.

Beaches will be extremely busy at this time of year but if you don’t mind the crowds then visit Kos Town Beach – it won’t be for everyone because it is buzzing with tourists. If this is your thing though, you’ll find plenty of sun loungers, beach side bars, and venues offering beach parties into the evening.

For something a little quieter, head west to Cavo Paradiso – a hidden gem in Kos that isn’t as easy to reach as other beaches, hence it being a tranquil getaway for those willing to make the effort. Soft white sand, turquoise waters, and stunning views make this an ideal spot to escape the busy beaches and towns during peak season.

Alternatively, if you need a break from the sun you might want to visit the Aquatica Water Park. While you’ll still need your high factor suncream because there’s little shade, you’ll be able to cool off in the pool, splash around in the aqua playground, or enjoy the thrill of the slides.

Exploring Plaka Forest is another option where you’ll be able to stroll through nature while enjoying the shade from the pine trees. Home to free roaming peacocks and theChapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, it is a beautiful place to visit for a little respite from the hot climate.

The life of Spicers You can expect the weather to be very hot in Kos in August. Temperatures average between 30 and 35 degreed Celsius during the day. The chance of seeing rain in Kos in August is very minimal. The life of Spicers

Temperatures drop a little during September, and with it being the last month of the warmer weather it’ll still be pretty busy on the island.

There will be highs of 26°c and with the daily temperature sitting at around 24°, it’s safe to say that many of you will book your trip with the beach in mind.

Kardamena Beach is a large span of soft sand that offers sun loungers, facilities, and tavernas, as well as the opportunity for water sports and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

You can venture from the shore and into Kardamena Town – take note that this particular area is popular with the 18-30 holidayers so it can get quite loud at times, especially during the evenings when the younger tourists enjoy the lively nightlife. There are plenty of activities to try during the day though, including horse riding, go karting, and scuba diving.

Preferring a more sedate getaway, there are other options. Taking a boat trip to Kastri Islet is one – a tiny and secluded islet that holds a castle’s remains and a small chapel. You can only reach it by boat, or if you feel particularly energetic you can swim to it from Kefalos Beach. Whichever way you get there, it will be a peaceful retreat of beauty.

While most people have gone back to their normal daily routines after the summer months, October can be the best opportunity to experience Kos while the weather is still nice and the crowds have reduced

The average temperature sits at 19°c, you’ll still get highs in the early 20’s, and with the sea being warm enough to swim in at 23°, there’s plenty of fun to be had at the beach and beyond.

Take into consideration that cloud coverage will increase so you may get times when it feels a little cool, but we’re sure it will still be considerably better than the weather in the UK during October.

If you do want to make the most of the sun, with 7 hours per day, you’ll have enough time to hit the beach. Thermes (or Therma) Beach consists of pebbles and is surrounded by cliffs. It can be tricky to access but once there you can take advantage of the natural hot springs – a contained pool that has water with high temperatures, making it an ideal spot for when the weather becomes cooler.

Going at your own pace is easier to do in October and you can do just that when you visit Ancient Agora – as you wander around the ruins of temples and shrines, as well as remains of markets and meeting places, you’ll get a sense of peace and relaxation.

November sees one of the most dramatic changes in climate. There will be 8 days of rain over the month, along with lows of 12°c. But with 6 hours of sun at 18° highs, the island of Kos is still a tempting choice to escape much colder weather back in the UK.

If you’re planning your trip in November, keep in mind that the first week of the month will give you the warmest weather.

Due to there being less tourists, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding accommodation, especially nearer to Kos Town – it’s still worth booking ahead though because there will always be people hoping to escape the colder climate of home.

Visiting the beach can be a pleasant experience in November – Polemi Beach, a wide sandy offering with clean waters is normally popular with nudists, though you’re more likely to see people armed with blankets and light jackets if they plan to spend any length of time here. The sea is surprisingly warm at 20° so taking a dip is still possible and most people won’t be able to resist!

Pack your walking shoes and raincoat (just in case) and take a trip to Casa Romana – a partly restored traditional Roman villa. Home to 3 courtyards and 36 rooms, you’ll see artefacts, mosaics, and statues. Within walking distance of Kos Town, it is easily accessible and ideal for those who love a bit of history.

The cold season is upon us now and with the increase in cloud coverage comes the decrease of hours of sun and a rise in the amount of rain over the month.

Although there aren’t many outdoor activities open due to the colder weather, you’ll still be able to access the historical sites that make the island so intriguing. With that in mind, head to Mastichari where you will have a great day out visiting the Hippocrates Cultural Centre, along with seeing the last remaining windmill that is still in use, and a stroll on the sandy beach before enjoying some delicious food from the nearby eateries.

If the temperature does drop too low for you, venture indoors and enjoy a spa day. Combined with the relaxing atmosphere of the island you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

Time in Kos during December can be a truly magical time thanks to the local traditions that take place for Christmas. If you have the opportunity to spend the festive period in Kos – do it! There are carol singers and traditional decorations, not forgetting the Greek delicacies and hospitality you’ll receive.

It’s evident that Kos is steeped in culture and is without a doubt a history buff’s dream, so any time of year would be perfect if that’s what you want from the island.

Peak season is for those that want to make the most of the sun and enjoy beach hopping, while the low months offer travellers seeking a quiet getaway the tranquillity they’ve been hoping for.
